Chapter 2 & 3

Vocabulary:
1. Find the word cormorant.  What page is it on?  Using the sentence, what do you think it is?  Look it up online and either post or print a picture of what it is.

2. Find the word pelt.  What page?  What is it?

3. Why did the chief warn the villagers not to visit the Aleut camp?

4. What good fortune came to the villagers?

5. Why was everyone concerned when they knew the Aleuts would soon leave the island?  What do you predict will happen?

6. Write a summary of what happened in chapters 2 & 3.

Pre-Reading Questions

1. If you were left alone on a deserted island, what would you have to do to survive?

2. Who wrote this book?  Has it won any awards?  Has this author written any other popular books?

3. This book takes place on an island off the coast of California in the 1800's.  What are these islands called (hint - not Hawaii!).  Find a map that shows the islands off the coast of California.

4. In the opening of the novel, the Aleuts visit the island.  Who are the Aleuts?  Where are they from?

5. What are situations that could cause overwhelming sadness?  How do people react differently to those situations?

6. What animals do you think would live on or near these islands?

7. Make a prediction about the title and cover.  Why do you think the author called the book by this title?

4.   What does Captain Orlov want? Why did the Chief not want to accept the captain's offer?

5. If you were in charge of the island, would you accept Captain Orlov's offer?  Why or why not?

6. Do you have any predictions for what a problem may be in this story?  What made you think that?

7. Find the word "ravine."  What page is it on and what does it mean?  What would it look like?

8. Find the word "parley."  What page is it on and what does it mean?
